THE MASQUERADE BEHIND THE MASK.

Communication, transportation and information technology are sure tools for achieving globalization in the 21st century, hence the emergence of diverse measures for achieving this feat. Although most people continue to live as citizens of a single nation, they are culturally, materially, and psychologically engaged with the lives of people in other countries as never before. Distant events often have an immediate and significant impact, blurring the boundaries of our personal worlds. Items common to our everyday lives—such as the clothes we wear, the food we eat, and the cars we drive—are the products of globalization.

Lately the internet has been breaking frontiers of geographical and regional barriers and far dominating the anticipation of its inventors and one such tool for this trend is the creation of social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and others.

The relevance of the internet and the existence of social media networks in our society today is a fact that cannot be overemphasized, but the adverse effects it portrays these days is eating deep into its importance thereby making it an optical illusion. Cases of cyber abuse has been reported globally ranging from; Online theft, Piracy, Character assassination, Sexual abuse, Impersonation to mention but a few, and it seem those of us vulnerable are good prey for our unsuspecting pillager to devour us like there is no tomorrow.

I will categorically dwell on issues In relation to character assassinations, impersonation and cyber scams through social Media like Facebook, maybe because these are more common today in our present society and for the fact some of us reading this article have been victimized, chastised and devoured by these inhumane marauders who take advantage of or mild heartedness.

I once had a laughable encounter with some guy (names with-held) months ago after his failed attempt to have an inside and authenticated knowledge about my person for reasons best known to him resorted into obliterating my reputation on every possible social thread he could find my post I treated him like I just don’t care, not until this trend became a ritual and a recurring decimal to many I know and even those I don’t know yet I read about them. The instance of one “Tracy Robinson” a dual citizenry of the America and Nigeria ancestry could not be any exception to this, I have followed issues she aired lately by some online Wolves who have succeeded in assassinating, swindling and abusing her on so many grounds all in the disguise of friendship and solidarity in her course to wipe out the lingering tears from the eyes of innocent, vulnerable and impoverished Nigerian kids, the most astonishing tone from this story is the fact those involved are the high and mighty in the society who flow in big robes and great appellations, my fingers are willing to type names but my instinct is holding me back. Sometimes when I run through the copies of reports I got from her (Tracy Robinson) containing their inane and malicious conversations with her it triggers me to give a big sigh of disappointment. “People Papa wey dey fool themselves” is what will always come from my mouth, but they shouldn’t forget in a hurry to realize the fact that “who dey cry dey see road, every day for the thief one day for d owner”.

Yes! We must stand to avoid falling a victim to the antics of cyber predators, don’t be shock to hear that the affluent in the society has also employed this medium for stealing, using their office, reputation, social status and political class as a good media for achieving their desires.

Take heed! Share this post to warn others.
